CLUSTER APPROACH FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF CR STRATEGIES

Large companies have the resources to deal professionally with future topics such as sustainability and corporate responsibility. Small and medium-sized companies, on the other hand, need a pragmatic approach and directly applicable solutions.

Initial situation

In a large-scale and publicly funded project, we worked with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on the development of strategies and measures on the topic of sustainability or corporate responsibility. These companies were interested in guidance to approach the topic but did not have any experience.

Objective

The companies should work on it in different training and platform formats and exchange and stimulate each other. For this purpose, the provision of self-assessment tools and comparative data supported the determination of a position and the development of a concrete goal. Suitable and practical instruments and proposed measures should be provided for the various clusters of SMEs. These should be used by the SMEs to develop their strategy and concrete measures. Agile and interactive formats promoted mutual learning and motivation.

Result

More than 120 SMEs have participated in the offer. The prerequisites were a serious interest, the personal commitment of the management, and the provision of the necessary resources to implement the measures developed. By determining their position based on comparative data, the participating SMEs formulated their concrete objectives for the implementation of sustainability and corporate responsibility.

The numerous instruments and examples of measures provided assisted in defining the measures necessary for the implementation of the strategic target image and adapt them to the purpose of the respective SME. The joint work and mutual support with representatives of other companies resulted in ideas being tested and improved.

Progress in the field of sustainability and corporate responsibility depends on mutual learning and a continuous development process. Therefore, we still offer formats for this purpose today. One example is the certificate course “CR Management for Practitioners,” which we offer in cooperation with the Campus Academy of the University of Bayreuth.
